Introduced to the public in 1963 as the successor to the legendary Typ 356, Ferry Porsche's Typ 911 has become an archetype of the purist's sports car, manufactured in the original, lightweight version for 10 years while being steadily refined.

Especially the last of the longhoods, the 2.4 liter models of 1972/'73, are eminently desirable collectors' items today.

Instantly recognizable is the 1972 model: it features the one-year-only Ölklappe (oil flap) providing external access to the car's oil tank. Since oblivious gas station attendants managed to fill the dry sump with gasoline more than once, this detail was dropped after one season. Today, any surviving Ölklappenmodell is highly coveted by knowledgeable aficionados.

The particular 1972 Porsche 911T featured here, VIN *9112100138*, is even more special, though, as it has been lovingly transformed into a bona fide Autobahn stormer, many years ago. Whenever it is shown, the cognoscenti assemble in admiration, drooling over its singularly attractive specification, lifted right off the pages of Porsche's old "Sports Purpose" factory performance manual.

Chronologically filed in a neat blue ring binder are 38 receipts, going back all the way to 1977, totalling no less than $31,660.64 for mechanical servicing, repair, and some amazing upgrades.
In 1989, Schneider Autohaus of Santa Barbara, Calif. fitted engine #6400873, a fuel-injected, 180hp Super Carrera unit, at a cost of almost $12,000.00. After many years of very limited use, the car was gone through with a fine-tooth comb, less than 1,500 miles ago, as another receipt shows--this one in the amount of $8,531.81!
Yes, creating an exceptionally clean and well sorted classic Porsche 911 doesn't come cheap, as anyone attempting to restore such a car will soon discover.

Interestingly, the Porsche is still registered to its vintage California vanity license plates. The story behind these plates is a humorous one: the car's owner for the last 32 years was an accomplished racer, yet he never managed to win outright, eventually receiving the nickname PLATZ 2 (German for "Second Place").

Starting our thorough inspection with the trunk, we note a strut brace and the original, gray Filz carpeting. Let's find out what's hidden underneath!

Thankfully, this 911 possesses a perfect "nose" section. There's no previous repair or corrosion to be found. Dual 12V batteries are still in place, as are tire jack and A/C equipment.

Surveying the car's arrow-straight coachwork, we note the perfect shut lines and absence of any damage. Thankfully, the bodywork has not been modified in any way, neither has the car been lowered. Brightwork, including the wide rocker deco trim and silver anodized window frames, is in excellent condition. Weatherstripping has been replaced where necessary.
HELLA 129 fog lights and Euro H4 headlights work as good as they look.

Repainted once, many moons ago, PLATZ 2 still shows exceedingly well. Finish is wonderfully smooth and glossy; there are no dents, scratches, or bubbles, just a few minuscule imperfections--such as rock chips--that were carefully touched up; certainly nothing to lose sleep over.
Note factory tinted windows, rectangular rearview mirror, and U.S.-spec, red taillight lenses.

Hallmark of any early 911 are the singularly attractive FUCHS alloys. Here, a set of the coveted (and very valuable) "Deep Six" 6Jx15 wheels has been mounted, fitted with excellent 205/60-15 PIRELLI performance radials all around.

Famous for business-like simplicity of design, the cockpit looks incredibly fresh, which doesn't come as a surprise, as it was just completely refurbished, at great expense. Let's have a look:

Concealed in a toothbrush-clean engine bay: the C.I.S.-injected, 3-liter Super Carrera motor, propelling PLATZ 2 into 911S territory with 180+ healthy horses. Recent, major work performed included installation of hydraulic chain tensioners, a new clutch, pilot bearing, fuel distributor, accumulator, fuel pump, electronic ignition module, plugs and wires, alternator, trans main seal, shift coupler and bushings, oil thermostat, batteries, and engine sound pad.

Last week, Über-Meister Tony at TLG Auto in North Hollywood--himself a very active R GRUPPE member--inspected and serviced the car for us. Here's what his compression check revealed:
- Cylinder #1: 165psi
- Cylinder #2: 170psi
- Cylinder #3: 170psi
- Cylinder #4: 170psi
- Cylinder #5: 175psi

Fabulous door sills and virginal door bottoms. Braided lines with anodized AN fittings lead from the sump to the auxiliary oil cooler mounted inside the right front fender. Neat!

While we're down here, we marvel at the absolute originality of floors and longitudinals. There's not a speck of rust to be found anywhere, and none of the flaws that are usually hidden by non-factory undercoating or haphazard repairs.

Tuesday, November 3rd, when we took all of these pictures, was a lovely autumn day here in Ventura. We decided to take our Jet Black café racer and head for the hills, planning to make a quick espresso stop enroute.

PLATZ 2 starts on the first turn of the key, every time. The hand throttle--located between the seats--works perfectly, thus we are able to keep the idle elevated a bit until the motor is fully warmed up.

Putting a fully sorted Porsche of this vintage through its paces is pure joy! Car runs, drives, shifts, steers, handles, and brakes with aplomb. Wherever we stop, it is a much-admired conversation starter.

On the 101 freeway, the '72 is in its element. What begins as understated throat-clearing at low revs builds to the most glorious mechanical symphony, achievable exclusively with an air-cooled flat six at 5,500 rpm and beyond.

Just 7,768 were ever made; 37 years after the last one left the assembly line in Zuffenhausen, an elusive E-Series Ölklappen-Coupé, conceived right before the advent of the first RS Carrera, is a very special find, indeed. This fantastic specimen has travelled a mere 5,236 miles since it was elevated to R GRUPPE specs, remains in superb condition, and is ready to be driven anywhere, across the country, if so desired.
