Now that the trend has shifted to Sprinter-type vans with hyper-complex drivetrains and emission equipment, in case of the RAM van even front-wheel-drive and a Fiat-derived power-plant, there's a lot to like about a solid, traditional van from the big three that features a simple, American V8 and can be serviced easily in the most remote part of the country.

The 2003 Dodge Regency featured here is a fine example of a classic conversion van.

First sold in 2005 and residing in Southern California ever since, it had been with its original owners for 15 years and has traveled a total of 46,302 miles in the past 15 years. The van comes with a clear and clean California Certificate of Title, a clean Carfax report, and a new Smog Certificate, issued on November 5, 2020.

Power comes from MoPar's bullet-proof, fuel-injected, 5.2-liter (318 cubic inches) V8, mated to an automatic transmission with overdrive. There are no issues of any kind to report, no fluid leaks of any kind, no untoward noises. This is a healthy drivetrain that should last a very long time.

The van's dimensions are a measured:

  • 213 inches (17' 8") in length,
  • 78.8 inches (6' 6") in width, and
  • 88 inches (7' 4") in height.

Spacious cockpit has a traditional layout that looks familiar the moment you sit down in the comfortable captain chair. You won't need to study an owner's manual to figure out how to operate the controls, like it's the case in today's hyper-electronic cockpits.

A large speedometer and four smaller, round gauges provide all the information you need. Everything works as it should here, without warning lights or codes present.

There are airbags for driver and passenger, the stock sound system with CD-player, and a center console that holds three large slurpies safely.

Gray colored captain chairs offer genuine leather on the seating surfaces and vinyl on the remaining sections, combining the best of both worlds.

Large, aerodynamic top allows most folks to stand upright inside the van.

This Regency comes equipped with chromed steel wheels, shot with 245/75-16 radials that have plenty of meat all around.

Being a California resident from new, the van's body is in great condition, with just minor signs of use. The white-and-silver paint is in equally good condition throughout with no fading to report, not even on top of the roof.

The van seats 7 adults in utter comfort. There are 2 captain's chairs up front, another 2 captain's chairs in row two, and a bench seating 3 in the back.

Large, factory-tinted-for-privacy side window provides a scenic outlook.

The entertainment center for the passengers is fed by a DVD player that has input for various sources. It's connected to a monitor above.

Spacious captain's chair in seating row two.

Wide bench seat in the back.

There are adjustible shades on all passenger and rear windows.

Bench seat folds down into a bed.

Van is registered 'til May of 2021.

Plenty of storage space behind the rear bench seat.

Folded down bed from the back.

This van embodies the final huray of the traditional, American van, powered by a good ole V8 engine. What you can buy today is hyper-complicated, with black boxes, monitors, sensors, and touch screens having taken over everywhere. This excessive complexity -- much of it in the name of emission controls -- has made vehicle ownership very expensive as only dealers with the most up-to-date computer systems can service it.

If you appreciate the simplicity of this last Chrysler-built full size van and plan to keep it for a long time, you won't be disappointed.

This one starts, runs, and drives flawlessly, with no issues of any kind.

Fly in -- drive home, across the country if that's where you live.
