Two-Top Convertible!

Back in 1971 , when the first V8-powered Mercedes Benz 350SL Roadster was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show, who'd have guessed that this model would become the most successful open motorcar in Mercedes' long and illustrious history. Built for over 17 years and constantly refined by the engineering department, the R107's final evolution, the US-delivery-only 560SL, was truly an impressive - and very expensive - motorcar.

More poised and more powerful than a Rolls Royce Corniche, less of a poseur's car than a Porsche 911 Cabriolet, more prestigious than a Jaguar, and more practical than a Ferrari Mondial, the 560SL would set another milestone: it would become the last classic Mercedes Roadster built!

The 1988 Mercedes 560SL presented here, VIN *WDBBA48DXJA075643*, is an exceptionally nice, well taken care of, low-mileage example.

Manufactured during September of 1987, the car was sold new on 11/19/87 in Portland, OR to Mrs. Jeannie Stewart and immediately moved to Phoeniz. AZ, where it stayed until 1991. For the past 29 years, the car has been in California, with the last caretaker, a Gentleman Rancher from Santa Ynez, acquiring it in 2008.

This fine collectible Benz comes with all its factory-supplied books, including owner's manual, maintenance booklet, service and warranty policy, operation & care of tops brochure, and even a glove box road atlas. It also comes with its authentic metal protect-o-plate and its Fahrzeugdatenkarte (build sheet).

Clean and clear CARFAX report confirms accident free condition and low mileage. Stamped maintenance booklet notes services @ 1,442, 5,391, 23,250, 27,321, 30,775, 38,450, and 55,973 miles.

Due to the always diligent servicing over the past 32 years, SL's engine bay looks exceptionally clean. It houses the original, matching numbers 5.6-liter SOHC V8 alloy motor, featuring BOSCH KE Motronic fuel injection.

Giving the contemporary Porsche 911 Carrera a run for the money, it takes a mere 7.5 seconds to propel this veritable street rocket from a standing start to 60 mph. Top speed of the 560SL is 137mph, again, clearly Porsche 911 G-Modell territory!

The engine runs quiet and smooth, yet it pulls strongly from idle all the way to its 6,000 rpm redline. No untoward noises, smoke, or fluid leaks spoil the favorable first impression.

Resplendent in its Signal Red (code 568) factory finish, the car's accident free coachwork is virtually unmarked. No dings, dents, or bubbles mar the smooth and glossy surface. Were it not for a few minuscule, unavoidable blems, calling the -- mostly original -- paint flawless would not be too far off the mark.

This 560SL certainly was never used as a daily workhorse, instead just as a pleasure car for sunny weekend outings, accumulating a mere 2,500 miles annually, on average -- and it shows!

Dark brown German Sonnenland canvas soft top is new. Hardtop has not seen much use, since this car was driven mainly during the summer months. Practical hardtop stand is included.

Perfection.

Here's a few detail photos of the fantastically tidy top storage area, speaking volumes about the car's state of preservation.

Mercedes' factory Gullideckel wheels still feature their correct matte silver finish.

Results of electronic paint meter survey speak for themselves. There's no bondo anywhere!

Inside, the ultimate tanning machine exudes a luxurious Old World ambiance.

Burl Walnut veneer and Italian ROSER leather set dominant interior accents, worthy of a Rolls Royce or Bentley! Velour carpeting is extra clean. Options include power windows, power-operated passenger-side rearview mirror, vacuum-operated power locking system, automatic climate control, and cruise control.

Everything works as it should, except for the clock. Air conditioning is ice cold on demand and blows out of the center vents, as required.

Interior details. This has been a non-smoker's car.

560SL's comfortable leather chairs are height-adjustable and provide outstanding lateral support.

Unmarked leather. (We were the first to remove the sheep skin covers that had protected these gloriously preserved seats for decades.)

Storage compartment behind seats. Carpeting is free of fading.

Looking like a photo from the factory bochure, it's of the actual car.

This R107 features excellent brightwork and trim all around.
Let's have a look inside the trunk!

Deck lid features correct, factory-applied light gray paint.

SL's luggage compartment is fully lined with fine velour carpeting.

Unusued, complete factory tool roll, a very desirable item on its own.

Factory spare - still with instruction label attached - sits in its own space below the trunk floor which, not surprisingly, is also flawlessly preserved.

Trunk floor.

The good news continues down under. This life-long West coast SL is completely free of corrosion and features all of its original finishes. It has never had rust nor needed any rust repair, nor is there any sign that the car has been involved in any fender bender.

Flawlessly preserved floors.

Friday, June 12, turned out to be another fabulous day here in our SoCal paradise. Blue skies and temperatures in the low 70s provided the perfect opportunity to excercise this Star Cruiser and snap some photos along the way.

Driving this gorgeous Roadster, especially with the top down, one enters an uplifting zone of well-being. We fondly remember a red SL as Bobby Ewing's ride in the immortal TV show "Dallas" - three decades later, park it in a circular driveway of the most expensive mansion and it still looks perfectly at home, proving that no car has aged as beautifully as a Mercedes-Benz 560 SL.

Equipped with BILSTEIN gas shocks on all 4 corners, the ride is smooth and totally rattle-free, just as you would expect from a car of this caliber. Acceleration is powerful, accompanied by the growl of an old-fashioned big block V8 engine. If you never had the opportunity to drive a 560SL, you can't possibly be prepared for the kick-in-the-pants experience!

The SL surprises with a level of comfort and performance unsurpassed by the majority of cars built today. 560SLs are among the few blue chip Mercedes collectibles following in the footsteps of their 1950s and 1960s predecessors. Steeply rising prices for nice examples like this one seem to confirm this.

This particular West Coast 560SL from the penultimate year of production is special in more ways than one: superb color combination, stunning paint and interior, low mileage, clean Carfax, outstanding service history, and beautifully preserved. It truly could be the heirloom-quality example you've been hoping to find!
