Here you get all of the comfort and quiet power of a contemporary Rolls Royce or Mercedes, at a fraction of the price of these European competitors!

This particular 1974 Ford LTD Brougham 2-Door Hardtop Coupe is an amazing survivor. Built at the Los Angeles Ford plant, it was owned by one proverbial little old lady from new!

The car is still licensed to its original, blue-and-yellow California vanity plate, and the indicated mileage of 46,901 represents the actual mileage this car has covered in the past 45 years. This stunning Ford comes with factory books and manuals -- even an original '74 Ford brochure is included -- as well as various registration documents. It is fully loaded, truly making it Ford's top-of-the-line offering for 1974! Options include power steering, power front disc brakes, ice cold working A/C, working driver's side power seat, driver and passenger remote mirrors, power door locks, tilt steering. All four power windows work flawlessly.

Look what we found: the factory built sheet, confirming equipment and numbers.

Plenty of power and even more torque is provided by Ford's very own 460 cubic inch (7.4 Liter) Big Block engine, the largest engine that was ever installed in any FoMoCo product. Understressed like a bodybuilder lifting a pen, it will potentially live forever.

The motor runs smooth as silk, doesn't smoke, doesn't leak, and doesn't display any bad manners at all. It allows this LTD to float like the most prestigious Lincoln Town Car, incidentially powered by the same engine. A stout C-6 three-speed automatic transmits all that power to a nine inch rear axle boasting of a 3.00:1 final ratio.

This LTD Brougham was built on the long 121" wheelbase chassis. It has an undeniable presence, without the ostentatiousness of its Lincoln sibling, the Town Car Coupe. The body is solid like a bank vault, with a build quality equal to a contemporary Mercedes.

According to the former owner, her car was meticulously repainted once, in its original Pastel Lime color, sometime in the early 1990s. We do not know if the black, crushed-grain leatherette top is original or a replacement, but it's in superb condition throughout.

Turning our attention to the inside, we quickly realize that everything here is very close to concours condition! The original headliner and sunvisors are superbly preserved, the dome light works.

The car was always garaged during its lifetime, and it certainly shows. The expansive dashboard presents itself immaculately preserved, with not even a single hairline crack visible anywhere.

Door panels, instrument panel, wood applique . . . it's all superb, and all factory original. A treat of the special kind is the perfectly working AM/FM stereo with built-in 8-Track player. An assortment of 8-Track cassettes -- from Henry Mancini to the Beach Boys -- is kept inside the glove box.

All of the seating surfaces are in immaculate condition. Be assured that what may look like color differences are photographic illusions. All of the "Pine Green" upholstery is consistent and flawless.

When was the last time you saw matching pillows in a car?

All of the lights work, of course, including the backup lights. Mrs. Dinius ordered blue California vanity plates, a novelty, back in the day.

Spacious, fully carpeted trunk contains shop manuals and a vintage American Flag. We counted the stars . . . can you guess how many?

Thursday, December 27th turned out to be a fabulous winter day here in our small, coastal Mission town. Blue skies and mild temperatures allowed for an extensive test drive/photo session, the windows all rolled down.

The big Brougham starts, idles, runs, drives, handles and stops just like it did when it was new. Effortless is the operatinig directive here . . .

Entertained by easy listening tunes from the 8-track and nicely cooled by the A/C, we found the Ford to be a delightful -- and delightfully relaxing -- automobile. It certainly brings back memories of the Disco era, "The Streets of San Francisco" on TV, and old mafia movies a la Donnie Brasco.

It's a joy to cruise around in the LTD. The epitome of Seventies attitude and style, it's a truly immersive experience.

Many of these durable cars were sold, back in the day. However, due to the ravages of time, few have survived intact. To find a one-owner, low-mileage California Brougham like this one is almost like winning the lottery. This vintage Ford makes for a great collectible as it's in show-worthy condition.
Best of all, it won't break the bank to own and enjoy this fabulous land yacht.
