Seventies' Icon:

1977 Pontiac Firebird Esprit

Please wait a few moments while our high-resolution photos load.

A decade after its introduction in 1967, the Pontiac Firebird had evolved into a poster child of the freewheeling Seventies, a time when Disco was king, and bell bottoms and halter tops in wild colors were a staple of American fashion.

This particular '77 Firebird Esprit, one of just 34,548 such machines manufactured for the model year, is a fabulous specimen. A 100% rust and accident free California car, it features sparkling Firethorn Red metallic paint over an all original, matching red interior -- a quite stunning color choice!

The car needs n-o-t-h-i-n-g, literally, and is ready for your enjoyment right away.

Power comes from Pontiac's very own 350 cubic inch 4-barrel V8, which provides gobs of torque from idle to redline.

The engine is as healthy as the proverbial ox. It starts promptly, runs smoothly and there are no fluid leaks nor any untoward noises to report.

Never been apart, all body panels display even, factory correct shut lines.

Date-coded styled steel wheels are all in splendid shape, shod with correctly sized radials of the size 215/70-15.

This 'bird has been repainted once, in its original color. It was a bare-metal job performed to a very good standard. There are no flaws to report, no dings, no dents, no scratches, no bubbles anywhere. The exterior's in primo condition throughout. Door and side window seals are brand new.

The quality of the paint is equal, if not better, than it was from the factory. You'll like it!

Flawless: sunvisors and headliner.
Note working dome light.

A symphony in color: Firebird's fabulous dashboard with wood grain veneer.

All of the gauges work.

Already over 40 years old: original seats! This Firebird is said to be a true low-mileage example.

Flawless: the two rear bucket seats.

Sexy rear end. All of the lights work as they should. Check out the original, 1977-issue, 6-digit blue-and-gold California license plate!

Original trunk mat and some goodies that come with the car.

Perfectly rust free trunk floor; unused, original spare still shows some white talcum dust.

Au naturel: unmolested, rust-free undercarriage.

Driving the 'bird is so relaxing compared to driving Porsche 911s.

Everything operates smoothly, yet the car surges forward with authority, all the while unmistakably emanating the sound of its healthy V8 power plant.

We would not hesitate to hop into this Pontiac and drive it across the country, relaxing, stopping at roadside attractions and diners, talking with plain folks. We got plenty of compliments driving it through posh Santa Barbara, indicating that it will be a crowd pleaser in many places throughout the country (and certainly abroad).

James Garner ("Rockford Files" TV show) and Burt Reynolds ("Smokey and the Bandit" movie) turned the '77 Firebird into a true American icon. This Bird's very competitively priced and we think it'll fly away very soon.
