Winter, here in SoCal, usually means temperatures in the 70s during the day, perfect for walking the extra mile. We like hiking through row upon row of the venerable Pomona Swap Meet, now in its 33rd year. Recently, Pomona has morphed into a celebration of all things latino, due to the changing demographics in the L.A. basin, replete with Churro carts and vendors hawking Mariachi music CDs, but you still see interesting cars--albeit most often with silly, inflated price tags gracing their windows.
Cool classics, like this '33 DeSoto 3-window Coupe (with a MoPar Big Block engine under its stock hood) capture a true enthusiast's attention.
Yep, you have to be a bit of a Nerd to own a DeSoto . . .
. . . but it takes a full-blown Circus Clown to cruise in this "shorty" VW Bus featuring suicide doors and safari windows all the way around.
Interesting find: a 1913 Oakland--predecessor of Pontiac--Brass era horseless carriage, proudly boasting of a 'self starter.' The owner had no idea how to start the car though.
We seriously considered adding it to our collection, if only the price had been right.
A fantastic one-off: Hebmüller-style Volksrod!
Immaculately detailed, this exciting, fully customized VW looked like a sure-fire show winner. It received our "pick of the meet" nod, hands down.
This '57 VW Oval Window sedan had us excited, too, since we truly enjoy cars that can double as yard art. Just let a tree grow through the middle of it. Right from the bottom of the ocean, the car came with a titanic price tag, though: "only" $5,500.00 buckaroos!
We have always maintained that a classic car is more than a mere mode of transportation. It can be a reminder of a better, simpler time, or even an adventure on wheels. Point in case, this Hillybillies Ford Model A Cabriolet Sedan with irreplaceable patina, looking for all the world like it's being driven every day.
Check out those details, such as current California Y.O.M. license plate, trailer hitch, tow rope. Priceless fun!
Some people drive a Ford Model T. Others own an Audi TT. But how many have a Ford Model TT? $1,400.00 would have put this one right on your front lawn. Reminiscent of Santa's abandoned sleigh, it's the perfect Christmas decoration! |
