2008 Highway 1 Treffen X
April 12, 2008

Well in advance we had Saturday, April 12, marked on our calendar, as it was the day of the 10th Karmann Ghia Meeting, now open to all air cooled VWs, happening on the grass at beautiful Ventura Harbor.

Unusally hot, so close to the Pacific Ocean, temperatures reached a whopping 92 degrees, with a stiff breeze bringing a bit of relief.

Since we had just sold our reference quality 1970 Karmann Ghia Coupe, we chose to display Bill's famous, freshly restored 1967 Karmann Ghia Land Speed race car. This amazing automobile was campaigned at the Bonneville Salt Flats and El Mirage Dry Lake for three decades and holds 11 records in various under-1,500cc and under-1,000cc classes to this very day!

There were the lots of nice 'driver' cars, a few top-notch restored ones, and very few genuine survivors, which truly are the ones that rock our boat. One of the most interesting Volkswagens was this fully documented, genuine "Samba" Bus that had served duty ferrying passengers on the runway at the Geneva Airport in Switzerland.

Winning its class as best VW Type 1 convertible, this light green beauty came fully accessorized--a major trend among VW aficionados. It even towed a neat, single wheel trailer behind to show off some fancy period luggage.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, there was this radically lowered, rusty Samba Bus with a scowl only a mother could love. VW folks love 'em like this, too; a steady crowd of admirers proving the point.

Another derelict-appearing, but actually very nice and original automobile was this one owner Beetle, still driven daily, 50 years after it rolled off the Wolfsburg assembly line. To us, this is a perfect collector car!

However, our absolute favorite, hands down, was this breathtaking survivor, an all original 1959 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet! Very scruffy-looking, it sat behind a Woodland Hills garage for 33 years until being rescued by the well-known Ghia Girl, Lisa Meyer, who won the class for best open Karmann with her beautiful, red '66 Convertible. Lisa went through the mechanicals on the '59 but--smart as she is--decided to leave the cosmetics alone. It might be one of the last, rust free, unrestored "low light" convertibles left, anywhere. (If you are interested in buying this car, let us know!)

Lisa knows how to accessorize. Check out that rare 1960s version of the i-Pod, complete with Bobby Darin record.

More eye candy, all period-correct items.

A fun time was had by all! Next weekend, we'll be at a different show in the Southland. Stay tuned.
